Essential Oils and Plastic




I always advise people to use glass when putting essential oils in their water or storing them. Even diluted essential oils will eat away at plastic in some cases.

Essential oils will break down most plastics. Some people will argue “if it does that to plastic, then imagine what it’s doing to us!” But we aren't made of plastic! The chemical reaction when we use essential oils in or on our bodies is not the same as when we combine it with a plastic.

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances extracted from trees and plants. They are the lifeblood and immune systems of plants. Essential oils have structures similar to our hormones.

Essential oils are carbon-based, like our bodies. So our bodies know how to use them. They work with our bodies to break down toxins and remove them from our bodies.

Plastic is made up of toxic chemicals. So essential oils will naturally break it down. Citrus oils, in particular, have a chemical make-up that is known to interfere with the chemistry of plastics.


Some plastics are safe to use with the oils. I just choose not to use plastic cups, bottles etc. doTERRA diffusers are made of HDPE plastic which doesn't break down. Plastics number 1 and 2 PETE are also safe to use.  You can read what Dr Hill says about essential oils and plastic here.

doTERRA Purify Oil. Where do I start? This one bottle of oil can do so much. Surely I'm not the only person who has put a load of washing on and forgotten about it until hours later, or the next morning even. I would wash the clothes again but they still had a stale smell when we wore them. Now I just put 1 or 2 drops of Purify on a cloth and throw it in the wash. Natural Cat Scratch Deterrent

Time and time again my essential oils amaze me. But using them to deter the cats from clawing our suede lounge takes the cake. W e have to chase them away from the lounge every day. We hear that dreaded clawing sound and run to chase them before they do permanent damage. I came across a recipe last week and tried it. It did make the cats stop and sniff around, but they still ended up clawing the lounge. I tried a new blend each day until I finally found this one that has stopped them clawing altogether. I put approximately 1 cup of water,  10 drops of doTERRA Eucalyptus Oil and 10 drops of doTERRA Lemon Oil in a spray bottle, shook it up and sprayed it on the corners of the lounge where the cats claw every day. The first day they came up and sniffed around, but then walked away. I haven't seen them near the lounge at all since then. WHERE TO GET YOUR doTERRA RESOURCES

So you have your oils, now you need to get some tools and resources together. In this blog, I will tell you where I purchase all of my sample bottles, reference books, sachets, stickers, which phone apps I use and other tools I have found to be useful. Obviously, you don't need everything that I talk about on this blog, but if you do want them, you will know where to get them from. The very first thing anyone who uses essential oils should purchase, in my opinion, is a reference book. If you are on my team I have more than likely sent you one in your Welcome Pack.  I recommend either The Essential Life Book or Modern Essentials. You don't need both, as they are both excellent books, but are very similar. I am a visual person and The Essential Life book is just so much prettier to me.
